A belt size is not your trouser size
Where the buckle sits, where the measurement starts and how you plan to wear it: three details that make belt sizing much less mysterious.

A belt marked with a number is only useful if you know what that number measures. Depending on the maker, a size may refer to a particular buckle-to-hole measurement rather than the full length of the strap. Do not assume two brands use an identical convention, and do not convert a trouser size into a belt size without checking the product information.
Start with a belt you already like wearing. Lay it flat without stretching it. Note which hole you normally use, where the buckle's pin or fastening point sits, and the distance between those two points. Ask the seller which measurement the new belt uses, then compare like with like. The full end-to-end length is a separate measurement and should not be substituted silently.
Decide where you want the belt to sit. Around the waist of a dress, through mid-rise jeans and over a coat are different jobs. Measure over the clothing you expect to wear, not just against bare skin. A belt for a loose coat may need more room than the belt you wear with tailored trousers.
Width matters as much as length. Check the belt-loop opening on the trousers you wear most often, leaving enough clearance for the strap to pass through comfortably. An oversized buckle can also feel quite different when you sit down. If the listing does not give the width, ask before ordering rather than judging it from a model photograph.
An adjustable or reversible design can be useful, but those words do not tell you how much adjustment is available or whether the buckle detaches. Confirm the actual fastening and the supplied size. Do not assume that a strap can be cut, punched or altered without affecting its appearance or return eligibility; ask first if an alteration is important to you.
Once it arrives, try it on gently over the intended clothing and keep the supplied accessories while you decide. If the fit feels wrong, contact the team within the return window before making alterations. Getting one measurement clarified before payment is easier than discovering that an attractive belt solves the wrong sizing problem.
